There’s a town in Missouri with a train tunnel that runs right underneath it.  Freeburg, Missouri, population 436 is hiding a dark secret, deep underground.  I spoke with the attendant at the Total gas station in town to get directions.  The tunnel is actually on the same side street as the Total gas station.

The Rock Island Line ran from St. Louis to Kansas City, and beyond.  It was known for bringing wealth elites to the Ozarks for hunting and fishing expeditions.

Recently, Ameren has been working to turn over control of the property that the line sits on to the state of Missouri.  The hope is that the corridor will be turned into the Rock Island Line, similar to the Katy Trail.  Follow the progress of the trail at bikerockisland.com.

If you travel out to see this tunnel, make sure you stop in at Hilkemeyer General Store and ask permission to walk to the Rock Island Bridge.
