I could sit for days to try and think of the correct words to describe Vimy Ridge. I don’t think I’d ever successfully describe this historic site. Located in the northeastern part of France, the land was gifted to Canada after the war. While my son spent our visit running around the trenches and tunnels, I spent the visit pondering if I could have had the fortitude to fight a trench war. Hopefully, I never had to find out what I’m truly made of.
The men that fought in these trenches lived with the constant reminder that their mortal enemies were just a stones throw away.
The Canadian parks service offers free guided tours in either English or French. They are brief and well worth the wait. You will get to experience the war that was fought under the surface.
